Kertesz and Cartier-Bresson versus Smith and Salgado
Compare the work of Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson versus the work of Eugene Smith and Sebastio Salgado. They are photojournalist with different approaches.
- What are the main differences and similarities?
Some of the differences between the work of Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson versus the work of Eugene Smith and Sebastio Salgado are the visibility of the photographer. of Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson both did their works by being an “invisible photographer”. They believe that it was beside to be invisible when taking picture that way their presence did not influenced what they where photographing, this included still-life. They also believed that to capture the right photo you had to use your intuition and that everything had its right moment. Eugene Smith and Sebastio Salgado believe that you must be a visible photographer and that the best photos came from interacting with your subjects. They believed that having the idea of a moment you want to capture can be practiced and repeated. Life for example Eugene Smith photographed his son and daughter walking down a pathway, the photo looks like a moment caught but in reality he had made them walk down several times until he captured what he wanted.
Another difference between the work of Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson versus the work of Eugene Smith and Sebastio Salgado is labour put into taking the actual pictures. Both Kertesz and Cartier-Bresson snapped photos when it felt appropriate and sold them to the press. Whereas Smith and Salgado snapped their photos and then spend many days afterwards manipulating them in darkroom in order to get them to look the way they wanted to. Smith played with the lighting of the photos in order to direct the views focus and Salgado played with the surroundings to create an almost godly or exterior force’s presents in his photographs.
A similarity between the work of Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson versus the work of Eugene Smith and Sebastio Salgado is that they both wanted to get their message across to the public. Kertesz and Cartier-Bresson method was to take the photos and have an explanation along side of it. Whereas Smith and Salgado both manipulated their photos before sending them out in a way that the viewers would look at and perceive the pictures exactly the way Smith and Salgado wanted them to.
- What’s the better journalistic approach?
I don’t think there is a better approach, each has its pros and cons to them. Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson’s methods are great for a raw unedited look at events, where your thoughts determine you perspective. And Eugene Smith and Sebastio Salgado’s methods are great for adding more depth and feeling to photos through the used of photo manipulation.
